From an Environmental Perspective: Is Natural Gas Renewable?
In recent years, due to increasing energy demands worldwide, various sources have been tapped to meet the energy needs. These sources have largely consisted of non-renewable energy sources. Over time, authorities realized the potential depletion of the environment and these resources, leading them to shift their focus towards renewable energy sources.
The sun, which is responsible for the formation of life on Earth, has been a source of energy for a long time. Similarly, the use of renewable sources such as solar energy, wind energy, and geothermal energy has gradually increased.

We’ve come to understand that we cannot meet the growing energy demand of today with existing non-renewable resources. These energy sources, which will deplete very soon, have given way to cleaner and more economical renewable energy sources.
What Is a Renewable Energy Source?
Renewable energy sources are resources that can be used continuously and are not expected to be exhausted in the long term. For example, solar energy; as long as the sun exists, the use of solar energy is virtually unlimited. Similarly, wind and wave energy are also inexhaustible energy sources. This means that these sources are renewable, and non-renewable sources include minerals like lignite and coal.
Solar Energy
The sun, which is a fundamental requirement for life on Earth, provides us with energy as long as it exists. Solar panels generate this energy source, and like other renewable energy sources, it has no adverse impact on the environment.
Wind Energy
Different air movements create wind. Turbines installed in power plants use these air currents to generate usable energy. Like other renewable sources, we can generate most of our electricity needs by placing wind turbines near coastal areas, mountain peaks, and open areas.
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is produced when water accumulated in cracks underground heats up and moves toward the surface. In our country, these hot springs are used for tourism and heating purposes. These hot water sources can be used to generate electricity by attaching turbines to them, and they can also be used in greenhouse cultivation.
Biofuels
Biofuels are various forms of processed remains of living organisms. Through photosynthesis, these sources hold solar energy within them, making it possible to process a significant amount of energy. Efforts are ongoing, especially in the use of this energy source in car fuels.
Natural Gas and Its Renewability
Natural gas, closely related to natural gas, has one key difference: it can regenerate itself relatively quickly. So, is natural gas considered a renewable energy source? Let’s answer the question.
Natural gas was first used in the United States in the 1800s. It has been used for various purposes, including electricity generation and heating. It is also the most widely used type of fuel in our country.
The source of natural gas formation comes from the remains of living organisms that existed hundreds of years ago. However, since its formation takes centuries, the likelihood of it renewing itself in our lifetime is very low. In other words, natural gas does not fall into the category of renewable energy sources because it cannot be regenerated as long as it is currently used. This is the key difference between natural gas and biofuels.
The answer to the question “Is natural gas a renewable energy source?” is unfortunately no. There are even statements suggesting that this economically advantageous energy source will be depleted within 100 years. Natural gas, unfortunately, does not have the potential to meet our future needs. So natural gas is nonrenewable. Considering its economic importance, it is essential to redirect investments in this resource towards renewable energy sources that can be produced in our own country. Therefore, investing in renewable energy sources that can be produced domestically will be beneficial for our long-term interests.
